چکیده

The air fluorescence technique is used to detect ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR), and to estimate their energy. Of fundamental importance is the photon yield due to excitation by electrons, in air of various densities and temperatures. After our previous report, the experiment has been continued using a 90Sr β source to study the pressure dependence of photon yields for radiation in nitrogen and dry air. The photon yields in 15 wave bands between 300 nm and 430 nm have been determined. The total photon yield between 300 nm and 406 nm (used in most experiments) in air excited by a 0.85 MeV electron is 3.81±0.13 (±13 % systematics) photons per meter at 1013 hPa and 20 C. The air density and temperature dependencies of 15 wave bands are given for application to UHECR observations.

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers

The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...

سطح مقطع طولی در بهمن‌های گسترده هوایی؛ نتایج ضمنی برای مطالعه ترکیب جرمی پرتوهای کیهانی

Nµ/Ne, muon to electron population ratio in extensive air showers at high altitudes has been shown to be a suitable estimator of primary cosmic rays mass composition. This study is based on simulated extensive air showers. The Nµ/Ne ratio has been obtained in 100 depths from the top of the atmosphere to the sea level for different primary particle masses and energies. An empirical relation bet...

Geomagnetic Field Eect over Azimuth Anisotropy of Cosmic Rays via Study of Primary Particles

Geomagnetic field is a one of the candidates for creation of anisotropy in azimuth distribution of extensive air showers over the entered cosmic rays to the atmosphere. Here we present the question: Is there any azimuth anisotropy flux in the upper level of the atmosphere due to the geomagnetic field over the entered cosmic-rays? The obtained answer is: yes. This investigation showed an agreeme...

Fluorescence in damp air and comments on the radiative life time

Photon yields in damp air excited by an electron using a 90 Sr β source are compared with those in dry air. Water vapors considerably reduce the yields, however, a further study is needed to evaluate the effects on the energy estimation of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. The relation of fluorescence efficiency to the life time of de-excitation by radiation is discussed.

Photon yields from nitrogen gas and dry air excited by electrons

In order to detect ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECR), atmospheric fluorescence light from the trajectory of the extensive air shower may be measured by mirrorphotosensor systems. In this type of experiment the photon yield from electrons exciting air of various densities and temperatures is most fundamental information for estimating the primary energy of UHECR. An experiment has been undert...
